C2 is characterized in the ISOBM TD-2 workshop and assigned by K. Nustad to group E of a cluster of 6 major epitopes of Human Alpha Fetoprotein. C2 specifically reacts with Human and Mouse AFP, but does not react with Rat, Dog or calf Alpha Fetoprotein as demonstrated by ELISA.

A BALB/c mouse has been immunized with alpha fetoprotein isolated from serum of hepatoma patients. Splenocytes were fused with mouse myeloma cell line P3-X63-Ag8.653.
Human alpha fetoprotein is an oncofetal protein of 70 kD. Its gene is cloned and sequenced and its structure identified. AFP is expressed in fetal liver and is normally absent in healthy adult tissues. It is expressed in all yolk sac tumors, in some germ cell tumors and in hepatocellular carcinomas. Alpha Fetoprotein is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac and the liver during fetal life. alpha Fetoprotein expression in adults is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma. However, hereditary persistance of alpha Fetoprotein may also be found in individuals with no obvious pathology. The protein is thought to be the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, and the alpha Fetoprotein and albumin genes are present in tandem in the same transcriptional orientation on chromosome 4. Alpha Fetoprotein is found in monomeric as well as dimeric and trimeric forms, and binds copper, nickel, fatty acids and bilirubin. The level of alpha Fetoprotein in amniotic fluid is used to measure renal loss of protein to screen for spina bifida and anencephaly.Synonyms: Alpha-1-fetoprotein, Alpha-fetoglobulin, HPAFP
