- Background: BIRC6/Apollon contains a baculoviral-IAP repeat (BIR) and ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme (UBC) domain and functions in the inhibition of apoptosis. BIRC6/Apollon inhibits apoptosis by ubiquitinating and promoting the proteasomal degradation of SMAC (second mitochondria-derived activator of caspase) and caspase-9.
