Interleukin-10 (IL-10), originally known as Cytokine Synthesis Inhibitory Factor (CSIF), is an 18.5 kD protein that shares over 80 % sequence homology with the Epstein-Barr virus protein BCRFI. IL-10 can i) inhibit the synthesis of certain cytokines (including IL-1, IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, GM-CSF, TNF, and IL-10) by stimulated macrophages, NK cells, and T cells, ii) suppress delayed-type hypersensitivity responses, and iii) costimulate the proliferation of B cells and their differentiation into antibody-producing cells which can express high levels of IgM, IgG, and IgA antibodies.
