Tissue Specificity: Highly expressed in brain. Expressed in undifferentiated neural progenitors and in astrocyte lineage, particulary in Bergmann glia, a subtype of radial glia, and a few discrete neuronal populations residing in the superior colliculus, the ocular motor nucleus, the raphe and pontine nuclei, and in various thalamic nuclei. Weakly expressed in heart, kidney, skeletal muscle, spleen, testis, gut and lung. .

Protein Function: Involved in both glial cell differentiation and axonal network formation during neurogenesis. Promotes astrocyte differentiation and transforms cerebellar astrocytes into radial glia. Also induces axonal extension in small and intermediate neurons of sensory ganglia by activating nearby satellite glia. .
Background: Meteorin, glial cell differentiation regulator is a protein that in humans is encoded by the METRN gene. The mouse Metrn gene is mapped to chromosome 17. It is concluded that meteorin acts directly on satellite glial cells to induce a change in morphology and that transformed satellite glial cells induce the secondary effect of neurite extension. In cerebellar explants, meteorin induced conversion of cerebellar astrocytes into radial glia and promoted astrocyte differentiation from embryonic day 11.5 cerebral cortex neurospheres.
